About Lasik Laser

What are Refractive Errors?

The eye functions like a camera. Light rays entering the eye are focused by the cornea and the lens of the eye onto the light sensitive retina (which is like the film of a camera) at the back of the eye. The retina then transmits a clear image, or photo, to the brain. In people with refractive error such as near-sightedness or far-sightedness, the light rays do not get focused on to the retina and therefore, blurred images are formed.

How can LASIK LASER Help?

Refractive errors such as near sightedness(myopia) and far sightedness(hyperopia) and astigmatism can be corrected with glasses or contact lens which need to be worn daily. LASIK is the latest procedure intended to reduce a person’s dependence on glasses or contact lenses by reshaping the cornea to enable light entering the eye to be properly focused onto the retina for clearer vision. In this procedure a thin hinged flap of cornea (the cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped window covering the front of the eye) is created and lifted to one side to access the underlying cornea (called the stroma) and remove some corneal tissue using an excimer laser. The flap is then repositioned in its original position.

Benefits of LASIK?

From improved self-confidence to a whole range of new activities, laser eye surgery has a long list of benefits.
1. Immediate results :
2. Freedom from glasses or contact lens :
3. New activities :

Who are Suitable candidate for LASIK?

  • Be at least 18 years of age, with no significant change in glass prescription for the past 1 year.
  • Have healthy eyes that are free from any eye diseases or corneal abnormalities (Eg: scar, infection etc.)
  • Should have good general health.
  • Should not be pregnant or nursing mother.

What Investigations are required before LASIK?

  • Comprehensive eye examination including dilated retinal examination.
  • Corneal topography to map the shape and thickness of cornea.
  • Dry eye evaluation.

What is Contoura and Personalised LASIK?

Contoura Vision is a topography guided LASIK technology used to correct refractive vision and thereby decreasing or eliminating dependency on glasses or contact lenses. The Contoura vision technology reduces symptoms that are linked with LASIK.It was FDA approved in the US in 2016. The Contoura vision method provides a measurement of 22,000 points as compared to 200 points provided by wave front-guided LASIK method. The imperfections in the cornea are recorded and is then corrected with the help of laser.

What is Contoura and Personalised LASIK?

  • Superior quality of vision
  • Consistent success beyond 20/20 vision has been achieved in the majority of patients.
  •  More than 40% of the patients were able to read one additional line on the visual acuity chart than that of a patient with 20/20 vision.
  •  Fewer visual disturbances such as glare, halos, ghost images, difficulty in night time driving and reading.
  • Superior to other laser procedures such as SMILE.

Frequently Asked Questions

As in most cases both eyes are operated in the same sitting, the surgery may take 10 to 15 minutes

LASIK is a relatively painless procedure after putting Anaesthetic drops. Some patients can experience pressure sensation for few seconds.

You can resume your activities in 3- 4 days. Swimming and eye make up to be avoided for a month.

Most of the blurriness after LASIK disappears by the next day. The vision gradually stabilises in a month

Rubbing of eyes is to be avoided for a few weeks after LASIK.
